The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recommends a minimum of 36 inches of clearance around every side of an island, with 42 to 48 inches preferred for busy or multi-cook kitchens. Here's how that translates by kitchen size.
In kitchens under roughly 150 sq ft, keep the island small: 36 to 48 inches long and 24 to 30 inches deep. Maintain at least 36 inches of clearance on all sides. If your kitchen is narrower than 12 feet, a rolling cart or slim peninsula often works better than a fixed island.
For kitchens between 150 and 250 sq ft, a standard island of 6 to 7 feet by 3 feet comfortably fits with 42 inches of clearance. This size supports 2 to 3 bar stools with a 12 to 15 inch overhang.
Large open-concept kitchens can support islands of 8 feet or more, including waterfall edges on both ends and seating for 4 to 6. Plan for 48 inches of clearance on the traffic side for safe multi-cook movement.
